Team Bahrain McLaren proudly finished the 2020 Tour de France with two riders in the top ten on the general classification: Mikel Landa in 4th place and Damiano Caruso in 10th.
We couldn’t be more proud of them and of the whole team for what they achieved at this 2020 edition, that started badly, with crashes, the withdraw of Rafa Valls and crosswinds, that made it a challenging beginning for us at the Grande Boucle. But with grit and determination, we showed great teamwork, protecting the team leader Mikel Landa, controlling the race and staying focused on our goal: to support him to remain a GC contender.
In between Wout Poels – who was lining up for his 8th Tour, despite the injuries sustained on the opening stage, he kept pushing and was awarded the most combative rider prize on stage 4.
We climbed the Pyrenees head-to-head with the favourites, making an important step, as Mikel improved his GC position entering the top 10. Then we have pushed every day, with our leader moving up the ranking. But the apex was on the queen stage when the team took it on early and sat on the front for most of the day, driving a relentless pace and imposing the tempo.
The same on the day after, backing up that performance with another strong ride, that saw Pello Bilbao on the day’s breakaway and then helping Mikel drop some of his rivals to sit in 5th place overall, ahead of the decisive individual time trial, that made it a thrilling penultimate stage!
Mikel Landa comments on this Tour de France: “We had a strong team that worked well together. I’ll look now with confidence to the future to come back here and do even better. This experience will help us to become stronger than now”.
Sports Director Gorazd Stangelj: “We came prepared to this Tour and we were competitive since the beginning. We gave everything and our results showed this. Our biggest aim was the podium, but we have no regrets as we couldn’t do more than this. We’re happy and proud of this group”.
Team Principal Rod Ellingworth: “We’re happy with the overall performance of the team. On this final week, we showed that we didn’t give up and worked well according to our original plan to focus on the final week. All in all, we’re satisfied with the team, I think we have done a really good job. Keep moving forward and keep the same spirit”.
