The 175km third stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valencia was set for a sprint finish. Our Matej Mohoric put in an excellent effort to cross the line in third, but it was the Dutchman Dylan Groenewgen of team Jumbo Visma who won the sprint taking his second victory of the race.
“Today the finale was quite hectic – commented Matej – and I together with Ivan Cortina had to try the sprint, but with 15km to go we both crashed but luckily we were back in the peloton 5km later”.
“At the sprint I saw Ivan had found his way to Groenewegen’s wheel and I preferred to stay a little bit further back, and then in the last kilometre one rider opened up the sprint in front of me and I tried to start too. Then he slowed down and then with 50 meters to go they passed me, but i think it’s still a great result for me. Now I’m looking for the decisive stage and we will see how it goes. “
Tomorrow, the Volta Valenciana will be decided on top of the Sierra de Bernia. The 2020 Queen stage serves three intermediate ascents before the last brutal climb above Altea: 5.3km long and an average gradient of 11.2%. The new race leader Jack Haig from team Mitchelton-Scott will have to defend himself from the attacks of several contenders to the final victory including our Teuns, Mohoric, Bilbao and Poels.
