We were expecting it to be a hard day, and stage 5 (Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve Geraardsbergen, 185km) turned out to be the hardest of the 2020 BinckBank Tour.
On the four laps of a tough local course, including the iconic and cobbled Kapelmuur, many riders from the peloton dropped earlier, but two of our strongest riders, Sonny Colbrelli and Ivan Garcia Cortina did not give up to fight for the best result for Team Bahrain McLaren.
Sonny was the protagonist of the day. After the accident happened in yesterday’s individual time trial, he was back on the road, sustaining his injury and joined the hard-fought competition in the chasing group from the reduced peloton with Oliver Naesen, Søren Kragh Andersen and Stefan Küng within.
The quartet came close before the finish, but Mathieu van der Poel made it to cross the line solo, while our Italian sprinter took a nice 3rd place for Team Bahrain McLaren.
Sonny Colbrelli says: “It was a tough stage and at the start, I didn’t feel to have good legs, but then I felt better throughout the race. I tried to attack during the final lap and also before the final climb, but then I was too tired and van der Poel too strong. Congrats to him”.
Comments from Tim Harris, our Sports Director:
“Today went well for the team. Sonny came 3rd and Ivan was 8th, so the team rode well today. On the finishing circuit, Mathieu van der Poel got away and he was really strong. Sonny and Ivan continuously were attacking until they could get away in a chasing group with Sonny.”
“Just did not quite catch van der Poel on the line, but we are really happy because we got the De Brabantse Pijl coming up, which Sonny won in 2017, so we look forward to a Top performance on him on Wednesday, and also Gent-Wevelgem next week with Ivan. It looks like we have a really strong team for the Classics!”
