The flat 98km final stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana was set up for a sprint finish. Despite the inevitable, four riders tried their luck, forming a breakaway, but the peloton managed the gap and caught them within the last 10km.
The sprint finish was won by Fabio Jakobsen of Deceuninck-Quick-Step, and the GC by Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates. Despite not winning the individual accolades, it was an overall team effort our Bahrain McLaren boys. They won the overall team classification, and we had both Teuns and Poels finish fifth and sixth respectively.
“We tried to win from the first to the last stage – commented Sports Director Gorazd Štangelj – we would like to get on the podium overall but yesterday’s last climb was a little too hard for Dylan. Wout partially recovered those 20 seconds yesterday that he had lost in stage 2, and so finished 6th overall”.
Dylan Teuns finished 5th overall. “It was really a good winter for me and here it was my first test and it was really good. I’m very happy with my first race week and in particular for my final position in the GC ranking. In the two uphill finishes, I arrived at my best, and I am especially satisfied with my third place that showed my good level already in February. Now, I can only keep working forward for better results!”.
Ivan Cortina finished 5th in the last stage “It was a short stage finished in less than two hours – said Ivan – and so the pace was quite fast. In the last 10km, I fought to find a good position in the bunch and I finished 5th. It was my first race of the season, and with my double top ten finish. I’m happy with my performance”.
