Pamplona (Spain), 22th October - Matej Mohorič will not start the third stage of La Vuelta after crashing on yesterday’s stage and suffering a compound fracture of the scapula.
The Slovenian rider was keeping a good position in the race and preparing himself to face the decisive Cat 1 climb. Unfortunately, he crashed on the slippery corner at the bottom of the downhill from the KOM climb. He continued the race despite the pain and managed to come to the finish line.
After the race Mohorič underwent a radiological examination in Pamplona hospital, assisted by the Team Doctor Simone Uliari: “The results of the scans he underwent showed that the rider sustained a compound fracture of the scapula. He does not require surgery for this fracture and it takes few weeks to the bone to heal”.
On his return to the team hotel in the evening, Matej commented: “I’m feeling good, but due to this fracture I’m not able to continue the race. Too bad because I had great expectations on stage 2 and I’m sad to abandon this Grand Tour because there were still several stages on which I could take good results.”
All of us at Team Bahrain McLaren wish him a fast recovery and good preparation for the next season.
